A maternal family is normally made up of between
20-30 people of three or four generations all of whom are descendants
of a common great grandmother. Their all share the same surname which
comes from their mother. The property is shared between them all. A woman
of high moral standards and learning is selected to be in charge of the
family affairs. The mosuo people call this woman “Dabu. There is no conception
of father in maternal family, so the mother act as the center of the family
.The woman takes care of the affairs of the household during the day and
meets her Axia at night. Dabu is responsible for putting food on the table
and even dealing with important family issues. The male members of the
family will give all their earnings to the Dabu, and the Dabu will decide
what presents they shall give their Axia when they meet at night.
